WasteCap Nebraska Profile
WasteCap Nebraska is a nonprofit organization committed to helping businesses and communities develop and expand their environmental stewardship programs, specializing in resource conservation.
WasteCap conducts assessments to help businesses determine their environmental baselines and works to develop recyclable markets throughout Nebraska. In addition, WasteCap has a variety of specialized programs:
- Another Bright Idea - A public recycling program for CFL and fluorescent lamps.
- Rechargeable Battery, Cell Phone, Ink and Toner Recycling - these are no-cost programs for businesses.
- E-Scrap Recycling - A small grant program that helps fund community computer collections.
- Green Team Roundtables - provide business networking and environmental education.
- Finishing Technologies - A certification designed to help the auto body and industrial painting industries satisfy the EPA HHHHHH regulation and conserve resources.
- P3 - an intern program with UNL's Engineering College to help companies deal with technical resource conservation issues.
- Service Providers Guidebook - A printed and online listing of recycling service providers.
- Construction and Demolition Waste - To divert C&D waste from entering our landfills.
Measurable impact on the environment.
In 2009:
- WasteCap Nebraska members recycled in excess of 24,000 tons of materials, saving nearly $220,000 in landfill tipping fees;
- Collected a total of 74,273 pounds of e-scrap;
- P3 interns worked with 41 different companies on 56 new assistance projects. The specific pollution-prevention suggestions made could lead to over $1 million in direct cost savings per year.
- 205 Green Team Roundtable participants attended events in Columbus, Lincoln, Nebraska City, Norfolk and Omaha. Topics in 2009 included how to start a green team, carbon foot printing, groundwater protection and the State of Nebraska's Waste Characterization Study.
