Family Tradition Puts the Taste in Tastee Stop Trolley's Treats

BROKEN BOW — The green trolley along Highway 2 on the south side of The Square in Broken Bow has drawn the attention of passers-by since June 16 when it was parked there.

Owner Jeanette Birnie, who opened the Tastee Stop Trolley walk-up concession, serves foods that are hard to find anywhere else in Broken Bow, including Tastee Burgers.

Tastee Burgers were a staple of her family’s business for years as owners of the former Dairy Queen, later called the Dairy Corner.

“I’m a fourth-generation restaurant kid,” she said. From the age of 7 in 1971 until her brother closed the Dairy Corner in 1999, Birnie was involved.

She began working at the front counter when she was 12, and helped in the summers while she was in college.

“For me, that was really home. It was fun for me and that’s what we did as a family,” she said.

Although weather will play a role in opening and closing times, Tastee Stop Trolley should be open Tuesdays to Saturdays each year from late May through September. Hours on Tuesday through Thursday are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, it will remain open until 9:30 p.m. The trolley is closed Sundays and Mondays.
